Where to Go, When You’re Hungry
Located at 6356 Greenfield, just south of Warren, is one of my favorite restaurants, Ram’s Horn. Ram’s Horn first opened in 1967 by three brothers Gus, Eugene, and Steve Kasapis. Ram’s Horn has been one of the most popular restaurants in the Dearborn area due to their big menus and warm environment that has their customers leaving happy and full.
Ram’s Horn serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner to all age groups and is also Halaal. Halaal means that the meat is prepared according to Islamic laws. This restaurant serves everything from salads to hamburgers. The beverages offered are fresh juices, coffee, tea, soft drinks, milk, and shakes. But what this restaurant has that others may not, are their specialty desserts. Their “Sweet Shoppe” includes low calorie desserts, waffles, sundaes, rice pudding, banana split, ice cream, pies and cakes. Customers can pick and choose what toppings to put on their desserts.
I went to this restaurant on the afternoon of October 11th 2009, and due to the fact that it was a Sunday, the restaurant was busier than most days. As I walked in, a lady with a nice big smile greeted us and then asked if we wanted the smoking or the non-smoking side. Choosing the non-smoking area, I sat down on their large and soft leather chairs that surrounded the sides of the wall. They are very comfortable and over-look Greenfield. The view of cars wasn’t too pleasant, but at least we had comfortable seating. I enjoyed the privacy that this restaurant had. I couldn’t hear my neighbor’s conversation and could barely see them. Faux trees and real plants covered a corner, which gave the area a comforting feeling. Large paintings hung on many sides of the wall, giving a picture perfect scene. The feeling was ultimately very homey in the spacious restaurant.

The table I sat at was very clean and a centerpiece held luscious colorful flowers. The plates and silverware were elegant and clearly sanitized. The sweet smell of fried food was noticeable immediately from the moment I walked in. The lighting was fair, not too dull nor bright. The space of the restaurant, overall, created a nice and comforting mood that put costumers at ease.

At Ram’s Horn, I ordered the Chicken Crisp Salad, which was sliced chicken strips with tomatoes, onions, cheddar cheese, croutons and fries. The chicken strips were crispy and delicious. The salad had just the right amount of Italian dressing. Their fries were warm and very crunchy. I also ordered Pepsi and a slice of chocolate cream pie. I got free refills on the Pepsi, which I enjoyed since I love to drink a lot of beverages. The pie was like taking a bite of heaven. It was amazingly soft and moist.
According to “The Metro Times”, Ram’s Horn is basic, cheap American fare, greasy and unhealthy, but oddly satisfying.” I didn’t find this to be the case; some of the foods were fried but not at all greasy or cheap. Yet, I found it satisfying to eat at Ram’s Horn.
The cost for my meal was nearly $20 dollars, including tips. But considering all that I got, it was an overall great price. Main dishes could cost anywhere from $5 to $10 dollars and desserts range from $2 to $5 dollars. Their prices are great for families with kids because kids eat for free.
The management at the restaurant was incredibly good. Walking in, I was greeted with a smile and felt immediately welcome. A waitress came right away and took my order with a smile. Seeing how many customers they have a day, this was a considerable gesture that added to the great name of Ram’s Horn. They treated everyone who walked in their restaurant like family. Reservations are offered, but are not required in order to dine.

From their great food to their great service, I would recommend having a meal at the local Ram’s Horn to my friends and family. Dining here again is a definite yes. My overall impression is this restaurant has it all. It has great food, service, cleanliness, and a comfortable atmosphere that has been getting people to come back and eat here for more than 40 years.

Music

My favorite type of music is mawloods. Its music about the birth of Prophet Mohammad's household. My religion doesn't approve of music and I am not a big fan of it either. This music is accepted and its great for parties, weddings, and so much more. This is a great site for music for Islam, http://shiavoice.com. My favorite mawlood is by Sami Yousif and its called Hasbi Rabbi.

Writing Awards 2009

On Wednesday, September 30, I attended the 2009 UMD Writing Awards, and I really liked it. It had a lot of great work by students that go to this university. I liked that some people did read to us to show us what they did. It’s to give us inspiring writers a glimpse of their work, so we can challenge ourselves to write better. I was a little disappointed that some people didn’t read, because they were nervous but in reality we are all nervous in front of an audience whether it’s one person or more. I think that they should have gathered enough nerves to read in front of us so we can actually understand why they have won. I did like the non-fiction a lot because it almost gave me a glimpse of what the author had to go through to write this. But from all these awards, I really liked the fiction. Stories that are not real are imaginative, they take a lot of creativity to write, and I find that as a true talent. I hope to one day write fiction stories as well.
In the poetry contest, I was a little disappointed too, because I was expecting a lot, especially due to my own poetry writing. I also wasn’t expecting a short poem to have won but I was happy that it was from a different culture and different religion. I always believed that people that had a different ethnicity can and should teach others about their culture. So they can help understand more of the outside world.
Overall, I really enjoyed the experience and already anticipating next year’s awards, especially since I will be entering most of my writings as well.
